Family Legacy Series 2008
Celebrating The Molson Family
The sixth annual Family Legacy Series, held by the Business Families Centre at the Sauder School of Business, featured Andrew and Geoff Molson of the Molson Family.
Feedback for the annual Family Legacy Series (FLS) Dinner, a cornerstone of the Business Families Centre’s event calendar, has been overwhelmingly positive since it started in 2001.
This year with the Molson family, the event did not disappoint. James Tansey, Associate Professor at UBC, and the leader of Sauder School of Business’ sustainability and social innovation activities, led an interview which touched upon dual-class structures and governance, providing a unique look into specifics of the Molson Coors Company.
The event was held at the Hyatt, and opened with a cocktail reception. The interview and questions and answers period took place throughout the dinner and dessert portions of the evening.
Founded by John Molson in 1786, the Molson Family has been in business for 222 years or 7 generations, making it the second oldest business in Canada, and the oldest Family Business in Canada. Brothers Andrew and Geoff Molson, seventh generation successors, continue the legacy of their very great-grandfather as the business builds upon its achievements and maintains strong consideration for community.
With these continual efforts, the Molson Coors Brand is a recognizable name both in Canadian and international markets. The success and experience of the Molson family made the evening a memorable one for the six-hundred audience members, who received an intimate look into the company.
Andrew, a member of the board of Molson Coors Brewing Company, is also the vice-president of the Molson Foundation – a foundation dedicated the betterment of Canadian society. Maintaining an active role within the family business, he has also acted as partner and Vice-Chairman of RES PUBLICA since 2005.
In Montreal, where Geoff lives with his family, community is also a priority. In the city of the original Molson Brewery, the tradition of giving back is not forgotten. Geoff is currently the company’s vice-president of Marketing, developing the Molson brand and strengthening partnerships with key stakeholders.
